Let me be the first to start the campaign.....Robert Marve for Heisman!
Alright, just kidding, but I think it was a terrific showing for him and what he can do when The Mustache leaves him in for extended periods and he can get into a rhythm.
But anyway, back to beer. I had a few buddies from home in town, and one of them has been trying to get into beer more. I figured why not take the chance to have a small tasting and introduce him to a few new beers, so I took a few bottles over to hang out.
Andrew graduated last year and I don't get to see him a lot anymore, but it's always a good time when we all get to hang out. To top it off, one of my best buddies Brandon was here too. Hopefully I'll get him posting on here in the future. But, once again, I digress because I have terrible ADD.
To break these guys in I brought 3 tiers of beer. I intended to start them out easy with Lagunitas Lucky 13.alt, move up a little with a Marin Start Brew Triple Wheat, and then break their palates with a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. Well, things didn't go as planned, but we still got to 2 of them.
I had tasted the Lucky 13.alt at a free tasting event this summer, liked it quite a bit, and bought a bottle. For a $5 bomber I figured I couldn't go wrong. Well, it wasn't quite as good as I remembered, but it was still fairly decent. This beer really gets a little boozy once it warms, but chilled a little on the cold side it is fairly good. Moderate hop profile is refreshing, but the malts balance very nicely. The whole review is here.
We got distracted playing cards and eating, so we skipped over the Triple Wheat and went straight to the DFH 120 because Andrew seemed excited for it. I've been almost scared of this 18% ABV monster since I had their 18% Raison D'Extra and it was harsh. Surprisingly, I kinda almost really liked this beer. It's definitely a sipper, but not overpowering for 18%. Hops are nothing compared to even a non-imperial IPA, but there are some hops. Sweet flavors ranging from toffee and caramel to brown sugar notes are the most prominent, and there was even a slight hint of coffee bitterness in there. See my full review here.
My want-to-be beer lover friends were split. Opinions ranked from, "It ain't Busch Light, so I ain't drinking it." to "I could sip on this occasionally." I was pleased to bring some friends closer to the craft beer world. Here's a glimpse at what the DFH 120 looked like...
Side note, today I should get a box from a BA LIF. It will have a Westy 12 in it....needless to say, I'm excited. Til next time...
Cheers!
