Founders Better Half

Alright people,

Tonight was kind of a big night beer-wise. I've been holding a bottle of Founders Curmudgeon's Better Half for a while, and have just realized that I forgot where I got it from. For those of you not in the know, this beer is Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale, aged in bourbon barrels that were also used to house Michigan maple syrup. One thing I like from the get-go is the bottle art. It's classy and looks like a painting. Also, it's a great evolution from the Curmudgeon label. But enough of me rambling, let's talk about the beer.

Poured just like Curmudgeon does with lots of particles. Great, sweet aroma, with both syrup and bourbon flavors. Frankly, I was blown away with this taste. Not being an old ale guy, it was a surprise. The sweet flavors really take away from some of the more aggressive bourbon and malt flavors. Very sticky, and almost syrup-like on the palate, making for a nice sipper. Review is here.

And a new New Belgium glass for $3!

Best part of this tasting is that the girlfriend, who picked out the beer to taste, actually kinda liked it. So far, she only likes fruity, wheat, or sour beers (of course the expensive ones haha), but this represents a step for her. Not being a whiskey lover, I was surprised that she like this barrel aged brew. Maybe I can get her to try a BA stout soon! And now, we have a big moment for the blog, as I have convinced her to be our first guest writer:

"I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. It wasn't bitter like most beers, it had a wood-like flavor with a hint of sweetness. While I couldn't drink more than a few ounces of this, I enjoyed the couple sips I took from the glass."

On one unrelated note, REDS CLINCH THE CENTRAL TODAY!!!!! PARTY!!! Now the Reds and Nationals just need to sort out who gets the #1 seed. It's a great day to be a Reds fan!

Until next time, I have one piece of advice; use beer as a social tool. Beer is the original social networking tool. You share a beer with someone, and odds are, you'll share a story or two. Get someone new into beer and spread some joy.

Cheers!
-Chris
