The Big Three

Alright people,

I know you've probably read something like this before, or maybe even tried it, but I had to try it once; the blind taste test between Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Bud Light.

Everyone knows that these three are pretty much staples of the average American drinker, but what's really the difference? Well, I have always thought that the main difference is brand loyalty, and we pretty much proved that right with a little experiment.

Let's start with the set up for the test. Me and 4 buddies got together, and not wanted to drop the cash or cases or 12-packs, bought a 40 of each of the Big Three. Get the pours into glasses with complete anonymity and boom, good to go. The original intent was to guess which beer was which based on appearance, smell, and taste, but it turns out that appearance is impossible, and since scent and taste are so closely linked, they were all the same. So basically it boiled down to 5 guys trying to identify these three by taste and smell, and the results were as expected.

Of the 5 trial participants, everyone got 1 beer correct. In 4 of these cases, the beer guessed correctly was Bud Light. Mark, who was the other result, got Coors Light correct, but then admitted he had already had a few beers, so we can assume his guesses to be a little skewed. Other than Mark, everyone got Miller and Coors mixed up.

Overall, this is exactly what I expected from this experiment, except for the part where I didn't get all three. I really thought I could get them all right, with the slightest doubt that I might get Coors and Miller confused. Low and behold; that's what happened.

Moral of the story: American Adjunct Light Lagers are fairly interchangeable. These three are made by two different companies, and that was the only real way to tell any of them apart. In a final note, I'd like to thank Mark, Raymond, Jack, and Scott for participating in this somewhat ill-prepared taste testing experiment. Until next time, cheers!
-Chris
