Alright people,
For any of my readers that are in college or went to college, you all know what MLK Day means; Sunday drinking. Three day weekends are pretty much the early highlight of every semester. Fall has Labor Day and spring has MLK Day, and over the college glory years I've experienced both. This semester, we celebrated MLK Day by having some people over.
Even in light of the possibility drink like it's a Friday night, the highlight of my MLK weekend was another little beauty from New Glarus, Wisconsin.
Here we have New Glarus' Raspberry Tart. This is a simple, yet delicious fruit beer. If you like raspberries at all, this is a beer for you. Upon opening the 750ml green bottle through the wax, there is an all out raspberry assault on the senses. The scent is pure, natural raspberry and reminds me of raspberry puree. The flavor of this beer is straight forward with raspberry, but surprisingly complex at the same time. It starts out with a slight bit of sweet fruit flavor, but immediately a funk appears. Raspberry is dominant throughout, but transforms as you drink. The start is natural, semi-sweet raspberry. Towards the middle and the end, a funk and slight sourness kicks in. Not quite as sour as a Belgian framboise, this is much easier on the palate and stomach. Check out my full review here.
Overall, this is a pretty darn good fruit beer. Raspberries aren't really my thing, but this uses them in a natural way that respects the actual fruit instead of using artificial substitutes. To top it all off, this beer is brewed year-round and is pretty affordable. That takes the cake in my book, because this is one of the first beers my girlfriend has really liked. If I ever get to Wisconsin, I'll have to pick up a case.
So, I hope everyone who got off of work or school today enjoyed the break, and hopefully it was with a good beer or two. For my readers in the midwest, stay warm, and until next time, cheers!
-Chris
